Caring For Your Chef Uniform—Tips for Looking Sharp

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

Working in a restaurant as a chef is no piece of cake (see what we did there?)! There are meals to cook, kitchen crew to supervise, and a ton of hungry customers to satisfy.

In the midst of the hullabaloo, one thing’s for sure: your uniform is gonna take a beating.

Since the chef is not just restricted to the kitchen and often has to come out and meet customers, a messy uniform is not what you want out there. Here are a few tips to keep it looking crisp and sharp:

Treat stains as quickly as possible

Spills and stains are inevitable in the kitchen, but that doesn’t mean you have to go around wearing a dirty jacket for the rest of the day. How you treat them depends on the type of stain.

For instance, you don’t want to rub an oily stain as that will just make your outfit greasy. In case of solid bits sticking to your uniform, pick those out before you begin washing the affected area. If a quick remedy to lighten or remove the stain isn’t an option, put it in the laundry first thing after your shift ends.

Be wary of chlorine bleaches! Those actually can increase yellowing. Instead, try using an oxygen-based bleach, which will help keep your items looking bright and white for a long time.

Keep an extra jacket

Sometimes stains can be stubborn and might not come off right away. You might have to soak them overnight, or send them off for dry cleaning. On these occasions, having an extra jacket or apron comes in handy. This way, you can go about your work just as before, without risking ruining other clothes or having to wait for your uniform to be ready to wear again.

Invest in good quality uniforms

As a chef, you have to make sure both your dishes and your attire are presentable. High quality products are made of material that is easier to clean and holds well to repeated washings. This means they are likely to last longer.

Investing in good uniforms will make you look more professional and sharp. However, know when you need to replace them. Sometimes, a uniform just cannot survive the burns and tears it gets. Don’t continue using damaged jackets and risk looking unprofessional!
